Dear Mayor Murray and Council Member Burgess,
I am writing today to ask that you support fossil fuel divestment.
Mayor Murray, I am asking you to please instruct your two appointees on the SCERS Board of Administration, Glen Lee and Susan Coskey, to vote in favor of fossil fuel divestment.
Council Member Burgess, I am asking you, as Chair of the SCERS Board of Administration, to champion fossil fuel divestment and find a way to enable the pension fund to divest from all fossil fuels as soon as possible.
In 2014, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated that to have any hope of remaining below even the 2° threshold, we have to remove $30 billion every year from the fossil fuel industry. Fossil fuel divestment is essential to achieving this.
We cannot keep investing Seattle taxpayer dollars in companies like Energy Transfer Partners, ExxonMobil and Shell — not only do these companies have a record of fighting action on climate change, they also pose direct threats to frontline communities both within the United States and globally. Investments such as these are incompatible with the stated Environmental Justice goals of the City of Seattle.
With the Trump administration in power, it is more important than ever that the City of Seattle aligns its money with its values.
Mayor Murray, please instruct Glen Lee and Susan Coskey to vote in favor of fossil fuel divestment.
Council Member Burgess, please introduce fossil fuel divestment for discussion at the next SCERS Board of Administration.
